Many believers pray in fear and uncertainty. They pray as if they’re awaiting the enemy to conquer them. But God wants us to pray with boldness and assurance of our victory. Jesus tells us that we would face a series of challenges while we live on earth, nevertheless to be of good cheer since He has overcome already (Jn. 16:33). Here are a few things Jesus gives us victory over.

Victory over sin.

The most important part of our salvation story is our salvation from sin. We were not just saved from sin, we were given victory over it. What this means is that we do not need to be enslaved to sin. (Rom. 6:17-18)

Till we become perfected after death, sin will always be a struggle for believers. But we must approach it with the mindset of an overcomer. We often relapse into our old way of living because we feel we can’t help it. However, that is a lie the devil wants you to believe. Jesus Christ has given us all we need to live above sin. First, He conquered sin and gave us that victory to hold on to (1 Cor. 15: 56-57). Secondly, He gave us grace which helps us to live godly lives (Tit. 2:11-12). Finally, he gave us the Holy Spirit to teach and direct us (Jn. 14:26). You are not helpless against sin, no matter how addicted or how innate it is. The new identity you have in Christ includes the identity of a victor over sin.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 6:14 ESV

Victory over death.

Jesus also gave us victory over death. This is not a reference to the physical death, but to the spiritual death. Jesus Christ gives life to every believer (1Jn. 4:9; Jn. 10: 28). Without this life that Christ gives, a person is nothing more than a living dead. However, when a person receives Jesus, he transitions from death to life (Eph. 2:5-6). Earlier, we mentioned that Jesus gives us victory over sin –and death by extension, since death is the penalty for sin.

Someone said that in this kingdom, we transition, we don’t die, and I agree. We only move from life on earth to life in eternity. Jesus died so that we would live and our eternal life in Christ Jesus starts from here. (Jn. 11:25) Therefore, we do not need to be afraid of what is to come after death. For every believer, it is a transition from life to life.

Death is the last enemy to be conquered. Though it is already conquered by Christ through His death, we obtain this victory finally after we have left this earthly body for the imperishable one God gives.

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Cor. 15: 54-57 NIV

Victory over principalities and powers.

The average believer is satan conscious instead of being Christ conscious. We are so concerned about all the devil can do, that we forget what Jesus has done. We feel like victims because we often tend to see ourselves as the owner of the battle, but the battle is for the Lord and He gives us the victory (2 Chr. 20:15). Outside Christ, you are worse than a victim. You are prey. But in Christ, you are more than a conqueror (Rom. 8:37)

Principalities and powers do exist and believers actively wrestle against them, the scripture is clear on that (Eph. 6:12). Nevertheless, it is not a battle whose end result we are not aware of. We are well aware of the fact that we have victory through Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:15 tells us that Jesus made an open show of these forces, establishing the fact that they are conquered. It is therefore erroneous for any bible-believing christian to get tensed because of witches and wizards. We must actively remember that we are not praying for victory against them. Rather, we are praying from victory through Christ.

Every believer already has victory through Christ over sin, death and powers of evil. However, it is important to live aware of this victory, or else we would suffer for ignorance sake. We must make it a habit to reiterate this victory to ourselves and to any evil spirit that cares to listen, that Christ has given us an eternal victory.

Prayer: May we always live conscious of our victory through Christ in Jesus name.
