“And God raised us with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus”
Eph. 2:6 NIV

You have heard of dead with Christ and alive with Christ. Today, I present you with seated with Christ. The testimony of a believer doesn’t end at dying with Christ and being made alive with Him, it progresses to being seated with Him.

First and foremost, this statement is a wake-up call to the reality of a believer. It points us to our present position. We have died, we have been made alive, now we are made to sit in heavenly places.

Once you were in the world, now you are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Once you were easily accessible to the devil, now you are beyond his reach. The Bible tells us today that we are seated far above those principalities and powers of darkness. The problem of the average believer is ignorance concerning their position in Christ. Many times, we let things that we have authority over, mess us up.

You are seated far above the enemy, how can he reach out to hurt you? The exception to this is if you are not aware of your new position. If you forget so easily where you are in Christ, the devil wouldn’t hesitate to capitalize on that.  (Hos.4:6)

That we are seated with Christ in heavenly places highlights our authority in Him. We are where He is, in that position of authority because of our faith in Him. It is easy to see why we are told that whatever we bind on earth, will be bound in heaven and whatever we loose on earth, will be loosed in heaven (Matt. 18:18). It is the authority we received! You are joint heirs with Christ. Don’t you get it?

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Romans 8:17 NIV

Ephesians 2:1-7 can be summarised into one thing for believers: victory. The death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus Christ mean this one thing to us as Christians. That we are now seated with Christ means we are seated in victory. It means we are overcomers. You are already victorious over any battle going on in your life. That stubborn addiction is already under your foot. You have been made to sit with Christ as a symbol of victory.

It points us to our newfound fellowship with Christ. We are told in Colossians 1:21 that we were once alienated from God. Our sins placed a demarcation between us and God. But when we believed in His sacrifice, we were brought close, close enough to be seated together with Christ in heavenly places. We are now in fellowship with Him, in one accord, of one mind. Through faith, we have become one, Him being the head and we the body. (Eph. 5:30: 1 Cor. 6:17)

Summarily, by faith, we have been made partakers in Christ’s suffering (death) and of His (resurrection and exaltation). Take note that these are all past events. God has already done it. You do not need to ask for it. Through faith in the finished work of Christ, you were baptized into his death, made alive with Him, raised together with Him, and seated in heavenly places with Christ. (Eph. 2:1-6)
