Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6 NIV

Jesus makes it clear to us that He is THE way. He is not one of the ways or an alternative way, but the only way to the Father. This is an important topic in today’s world. Not just for unbelievers but for believers as well. Some Christians are still skeptical about this matter and for this reason, they find it difficult to hit the nail on the head.

The first thing to consider concerning this is Jesus’s deity. The reason why a person would dispute Jesus’ claim as the way to the Father is that they see Him just as a good teacher, or at best, a prophet. It would be far-fetched and possibly blasphemous if a random teacher or prophet made this statement. But when we realize that it is the Lord speaking, when we consider that it is the fullness of God and the Word made flesh making this statement, we will understand that this is not a baseless claim but the truth. (Jn. 1:1;14, Isa. 9:6)

The way to salvation

In John 3:16 we are told that belief in Jesus is the only way to escape perishing. Jesus is the way to salvation.

This is the singularity of the faith. We believe there is no other way to God, the Father because the scriptures tell us so. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12 NIV).

When Jesus died on that cross, He offered up the perfect and only atonement sacrifice for man, and just like it was in the days of Moses, only those who identify with that sacrifice can be beneficiaries of it (Heb. 10:12 NLT; Lev. 1:4). Until a person identifies with the sacrifice of Jesus, He is not yet saved.

Going to a place for the first could be problematic if you do not have a GPS or any sort of guide to the location. Sometimes, the roads look similar and you even get confused. Life is like that without Jesus.

You may feel like you’ve been walking in circles. You may be wandering, lost even. Jesus is the way. He is the way to all that you desire. He is the way to peace, joy, and satisfaction. He is the way to eternal rest.

The way for believers

Many believers accept that Jesus is the way to salvation but still find it hard to live by this truth. We profess with our lips that Jesus is the way, however, we try other ways to get to the Father. We create our own “way” with works and many activities.

Believers must remember that there remains only one way. Your works are only the fruit of your conviction. It is not what saves you or leads you to the destination. Activities are not the focus, Jesus Christ is. Galatians 2:16 tells us that we are justified not by our works but through Jesus Christ. The justification and sanctification we need to stand before God was given to us through Jesus. He is the way.

This also tells us the template we have to follow. If Jesus is the way to follow, we should just emulate Him. If you choose to imitate a spiritual leader, be sure they are imitating Jesus (1 Cor. 11:1). Even if you know the way, if you don’t follow it, you will still end up at the wrong destination. Christians are not to follow doctrines or worldly trends. We are called to follow Christ. (Lk. 9:23; Jn. 10:27)

The way for all

Jesus, as the way, is a way for all. He is not reserved for some sects. He is open and accessible to all who find Him and wish to follow. He is not a hidden way or a tough way to ply. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Matthew 11:29-30

This is a call to believers to tell more people about Jesus. If we believe Jesus to be the only way, we would do more to bring people into the light, we would tell more people about THE way. Don’t worry about getting them to the destination. It is not your job to do. Concern yourself with leading them to the way instead.

To see God and be with Him is impossible if you do not follow the way. There may be many other “ways” but they are dead ends. The only way that leads to the Father is Jesus. Accept Him into your life today, and say this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I thank you for your sacrifice of love for me. I recognize you as the way, the truth, and the life. From now on, I will follow you into eternity. Amen”.
