What if I told you just three simple words held the key to unlocking eternal life, forgiveness, and purpose? In a world filled with uncertainty, one truth remains unshakeable: Jesus is Lord. Today, we explore the richness and power of this statement.
I’m no professor of English but I did a little research on this phrase. And from what I gather, Jesus is not like a Lord, neither is He one of the lords. Jesus is Lord. In essence, we can equate Lordship to Jesus. Want to know the definition of Lord? It’s Jesus. This is not a comparative statement but an affirmative one. It affirms His identity, characteristics and status. It declares the truth of His sovereignty and authority.
When we say Jesus is Lord, we must understand that it is not a random phrase coined by the church. It is pure truth with scriptural backing. Even Jesus confirms it by Himself. The first thing that tells us is that Jesus is more than a good teacher or powerful prophet.
“and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:11 AMP
“You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is who I am.”
John 13:13 AMP
This is not a way of honoring Jesus, as some people have wrongly thought. Some people think it is an olden-day equivalent of saying “sir”. But it’s not. The scripture shows us how its usage is intended; to pronounce the deity of Jesus Christ. The Psalmist acknowledged this in Psalm 110:1 and after Jesus’ resurrection, Thomas does the same. Thomas wasn’t implying respect or honor as you would accord your teacher. He was implying reverence and divinity as you would accord to God.
“Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe.” Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 20:27-28 AMP
In case you weren’t aware, Jesus is Lord even till today. The scripture tells us in Luke 1:33 that there shall be no end the government of Jesus. He remains Lord tomorrow, just as much as He is Lord today. As a cat is an animal, so is Jesus Lord. Essentially, it is an unchanging truth and a fundamental aspect of reality.
Jesus is Lord. This is not an opinion. It is not based on what you believe or not. It is truth. It is not subjective, rather, it is objective. Whether we acknowledge it or not, everything in this world is subject to Jesus’ rule. Knees bow and tongues eventually confess this—even against their desires—that Jesus is Lord. Deny it all you want, but Jesus is Lord.
“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:10-11 NLT
Confessing that Jesus is Lord is key in being saved. It is one of the fundamental things that a person must do to be saved. However, this should not just be mere lip-service but a sincere confession from a believing heart.
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”
Romans 10:9-10 NLT
Unfortunately, many people today confess with their mouths but not all of them believe with their hearts that Jesus is Lord. The two must work together for a person to be saved. Your confession must be made with sincerity and conviction, therein lies your salvation.
Finally, if we acknowledge His Lordship, then we must submit to His authority. If I call a person my leader, then I must be ready to follow as they lead, except I feigned my allegiance. The problem with many Christians today is that we acknowledge Him without submitting to Him…and that’s not real acknowledgement.
We must be ready to make Him Lord of our lives, careers, health, relationships, finances, etc. We must be able to step back and let Him to take the lead, to be like Peter and say “…nevertheless, at thy word” (Lk. 5:5)
If you’re reading this and haven’t yet taken the step of faith to confess Jesus as Lord and believe in Him with all your heart, today offers a life-changing opportunity. Rather than waiting until it’s too late, why not make this confession now and receive salvation? Say this prayer: Dear Jesus, I thank you for your sacrifice of love for me. I acknowledge you as Lord and believe it with my heart. I confess that you are my Lord and Savior today, always and forever. Amen.
