As a believer, you do not just have light, you are light. It’s not news to any believer that being the light of the world is part of our identity in Christ. Many of us know that portion of scripture off hand and can quote it even in our sleep. But only a few people actually know the significance of this. Only a few people understand the significance of being light. (Matt. 5:14)

From our basic knowledge of light, we know that it is the solution to darkness (Jn. 1:5). Without light, there is darkness. In essence, your light is for putting darkness to flight. You are light to terrorize the kingdom of darkness. At the beginning of the world, God has separated light from darkness. The two are separate entities. Therefore, there is nothing that unites the kingdom of darkness with that of light. Light will always be a threat to darkness. The significance of your light is to cast away darkness from wherever you may find yourself. One flashlight cannot give light to the whole world, but it definitely can light up a room.

So, if truly you are letting your light shine, darkness should find it hard to thrive near you. Do not try to compromise with darkness, nor get comfortable with it. The scripture tells us to awaken to our identity and live as such. Only an ignorant person would live as a pauper when he has been crowned as a prince. (1 Thess. 5:5; Eph. 5:8)

For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

1 Thess. 5:5; Eph. 5:8

Many people use light to depict hope. This is because there is a pure and comforting feeling light gives. It is out of scope for a believer to be a pessimist. Our identity signifies that we are hope-bringers. Optimism is not old-fashioned. Jesus wants us to have a positive outlook on things. There are multiple scriptures to back this up (Rom. 8:28; Php. 4:4; Jhn. 16:33). And this is not a means of fooling ourselves into believing what is not true, but a way of reminding ourselves of the finality of Jesus’ words. The significance of your light is to bring hope to others. Being that person who always has something discouraging, often masked as “being real” is not part of your identity. You are light to bring hope, first to yourself then to others, through Christ.

It is pointless to have light and hide it. It is pointless to have light and cover it up. Instead, it must be on a lampstand. It must be at a vantage point, where it can serve to benefit those around. We should not permit the devil to toy with us. Neither should we be quiet in the face of evil doing. As believers, we must position ourselves where we can help, where we can make impact. We should not hide away what God has deposited in us. (Lk. 8:16)

There is no better time to remind us of our identity and its significance, than now. The world keeps getting darker by the day but believers must make it a mission to let their shine before men so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)

In this very dark world, be the light. Be the solution to this troubled world. Jesus made no mistakes when He called us the light of the world. He did so knowing fully well that this world needs light. This world needs believers, the ones that are aware of and not afraid to live out their identity.

It is Jesus that gives us this light. Whoever follows Him has light (Jn. 8:12). Outside Christ, you cannot have the identity of light. Therefore, only those who belong to Him can enjoy the perks of being the light. Only those who are in Christ can make such an impact that light does. Today presents you with an opportunity to become light in Christ. Say this prayer: Dear Jesus, I thank you for dying for my sake and forgiving me my sins. I acknowledge you as my Lord and Savior. From today, I live as the light you intend me to be in Jesus name. Amen.
