Many Christians do not understand the idea of God’s power. We often say “God is powerful” or “God has power” but do we really grasp what this means? Does the realization of this ever dawn on us?
This topic will be split into two parts; the first explains the ways God shows His power and the other will explain the misconceptions and essence of this power to a believer.

What are some of the ways God reveals His power?
I was sharing with my friend a few days ago that not many believers believe in the power of God. I mean, we say we do but really, we don’t. I’m not a fan of publicizing your plans because I believe some things are better kept secret until manifestation. However, I am also opposed to the idea of secrecy borne out of fear. I once heard of a family that was making plans to leave their vacation home. When asked when they would be leaving, they gave a different date from their true departure date, all in the name of “evil eye”. It’s okay for people of the world to think this way. But not believers. Not people who believe in the One called “the Mighty Man in battle”. (Psa. 24:8; Ex. 15:3)

“But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”
2Thess. 3:3 NIV

One of the many areas in which God reveals His power is in His power to protect. God is very much able to protect His people from whatever evil eye, scheming relative, or bloodsucking witch. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 tells us that the Lord is faithful and will guard you against the evil one. Proverbs 18:10 tells us that the name of the Lord is a strong tower, any righteous person can run into it and be safe. God is so powerful that He created the whole world and still sustains it. No one else comes close. Except you’re in doubt of God’s power to protect, there’s no reason why you should rate witchcraft or human devices more than the power of God.

“No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
Isaiah 54:17 NIV

God’s power is seen in His humility. I remember seeing a book titled “She Stoops to Conquer” a while back. It reminded me of what my Lord and Savior did. God’s great power was displayed in His humility. There is so much power in humility. It takes a great deal of strength to abase oneself. For Paul, it was something he couldn’t do without Christ (Php. 4:12a,13). Leaving His glory behind, Jesus came to earth taking the lowly form of man, lived a lowly life, and died a lowly death. The great power of God was revealed by the fact that the word of God became flesh and died for your–my, our–sins in a humiliating way, just so we could be saved (Jn. 1:1,14). The power of salvation was made manifest by the power of His humility. You and I can speak assuredly of our saved souls because of that one, powerful sacrifice.

“Think not that humility is weakness; it shall supply the marrow of strength to thy bones. Stoop and conquer; bow thyself and become invincible”.

Charles Spurgeon

Moreover, we can see God’s power at work when we evaluate the transformation that occurs in a believer. There are countless Biblical examples. Shall we speak of Peter who moved from being timid and fearful to becoming as bold as a lion? Or shall we speak of Paul who was a known and feared persecutor of the church but ended up writing a great part of the New Testament? Zaccheus became a good man. The madman of Gadara became an evangelist. The list could go on. Even you can attest to the old, sinful you slowly dying away to give way to the new, justified you. It is the transformative power of God in every believer. This power is made evident by the Holy Spirit. (Gal. 5:22; Acts 1:8 2Cor. 3:18)

This is why I tell people that sometimes, you don’t need to tell a person that they’re living wrong. Introduce them to Jesus. Let the Holy Spirit do His work of transformation. Soon, you will realize that those old habits have died off and a new life begins. This is the new creature reality in Christ. (2 Cor. 5:17)

One beauty of the power of God is that we can rely on it. It is readily available to us. Paul learned this through experience (2 Cor. 12:8-9). Whenever you feel weak or overwhelmed, His power is made available to you. Like Paul, I choose to rejoice in my weakness knowing well that God’s power, through Christ, will rest on me. Both of us can’t be strong together. I would rather rely on God’s power than use mine–which is in the actual sense not powerful enough.

The dynamics of God’s power go beyond protection. God’s power is present to heal, deliver, save, reverse evil circumstances, and strengthen. If you feel attacked or weak, even for a moment, let the power of God rest on you. If you feel your faith waver or your desires navigate towards what is wrong before God, let God’s power rest on you. His strength is made known in your weakness.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
